(INDIANAPOLIS) – The Indianapolis Cultural Trail is receiving a million-dollar grant.

The eight-mile bike and pedestrian trail which winds through downtown received the money from the Anthem Foundation, the nonprofit arm of the Indianapolis-based health insurance company,. Most of the money will go into the trail’s maintenance endowment. Cultural Trail executive director Karen Haley says that will generate about $40,000 a year every year, ensuring a stable foundation to keep the trail clean.

The trail will spend $50,000 of the grant money to install counters to see how many people are using different sections of the trail, and for what. Haley says that will allow the trail to make more informed decisions about maintenance, and explore the trail’s connections to the rest of the city. And $100,000 will pay for the expansion of the Pacers Bikeshare program announced earlier this year.
