DALEVILLE, Ind.–A man died shortly after he was handcuffed in police custody Monday.

State police say a black 2019 Hyundai was going south on the southbound ramp to I-69 from State Road 67 and went off the road, crashed through the retaining fence of the interstate, and into a field before hitting a tree.

When Daleville police and firefighters arrived, they say they found Dion L. Crittle, 24, of St. Louis, Missouri (the driver of the Hyundai) walking away from the crash and refusing to stop.

Investigators say an officer and firefighter were able to subdue Crittle and put him in handcuffs until they could determine what happened. Later, they realized that Crittle became unresponsive on the ground.

They rushed him to IU Health Ball Memorial Hospital, but he did not survive. He was pronounced dead at the hospital.

The Daleville Police Department has asked the Indiana State Police to conduct an investigation into the incident.
