ANDERSON, Ind. — An 18-year-old father has been charged with neglect after his daughter went to the hospital with broken bones and bleeding on the brain.

On Nov. 1 police were called to Peyton Manning Children’s Hospital where Justin Dickey’s two-month-old was being examined.

The baby was “covered in bruises,” said court documents.

When police asked Dickey what happened he said he dropped her but later said he gripped her too hard when she wouldn’t stop crying.

He also said that she slipped from his hands and fell into her crib, where she landed on two metal poles. He said he blacked out, but remembers being angry and spanking the child and squeezing her face.

Dickey’s daughter had two broken bones in her back, a fracture in her leg, and bleeding in the lining of her brain.

Dickey entered a not guilty plea on Friday and was appointed a public defender.
