GARY, Ind. — State Sen. Eddie Melton dropped out of the race for governor, saying he’d better serve Indiana in this year’s legislative session.

The Democrat from Gary says there’s not enough time for both.

“Unfortunately politics today require way too much of a candidate’s time being spent on the phone chasing dollars,” Melton said in a prepared statement. “Fixing our systems of elections will take the work of all of us.”

Melton joined the race for governor to try and defeat Gov. Eric Holcomb, with support from Republican Superintendent of Public Instruction Jennifer McCormick.

Dr. Woody Myers is running as a Democrat candidate.

Melton thanked his family, friends, and supporters.
