STATEWIDE–Temperatures will be warmer than usual today, but that all changes Wednesday.

National Weather Service of Indianapolis Meteorologist Jason Puma says the state will see temperatures be in the high 50s and low 60s Monday and Tuesday, but then there is a chance of some winter weather to move in for many places beginning Wednesday.

“After a cold front moves through Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday, we’ll get back to more winter-like temperatures, more seasonable temperatures. We’ll have a chance for rain and snow on Wednesday, a chance of wintry mix in the area on Thursday as well, and then a chance of snow on Friday with highs each of those days in the middle 30s,” Puma says.

Puma says the northern and central portion of the state is more likely to see snow than the southern portion.

“Snow amounts on Wednesday look like they could be on the lighter side. Minor accumulations are possible. We are going to keep on watching that with the latest model runs,” Puma said.

But for now, Puma discussed why temperatures are warmer.

“We have a strong area of high pressure across the deep south and that’s allowing for a southwesterly flow to spill into the Ohio Valley. Most of the Canadian cold and polar air are being bottled up in Canada due to a strong jetstream aloft that it really hasn’t allowed any of that cold air to come down into the Ohio Valley to give us those snowfalls,” Puma said.

Puma reiterates that winter is not over by any means.

“Getting a snowfall in March or early April is not out of the question. We have to be prepared for changeable at all times,” Puma said.
