(INDIANAPOLIS) – The Indy Cultural Trail is expanding.

The trail will stretch from the current eight miles to 10. By 2022, it’ll complete new connections from Lucas Oil Stadium to Eli Lilly and the new CityWay development, and from the Madame Walker Theatre to the 16 Tech Innovation District.

The trail already runs along Indiana Avenue, the hub of Indy’s jazz scene in the ’30s and ’40s, but doesn’t quite reach the Walker Center. Executive director Karen Haley says that’s a significant omission from the city’s significant cultural landmarks. The expansion will take the trail right to the front door.

Haley says the project will also include new art along the trail, with neighborhood meetings this spring to discuss what that might be.

A $20 million Lilly Endowment grant is funding most of the $30 million cost. The city is chipping in $5 million, and a $1 million grant from Anthem for trail mantenance was announced last fall. The trail is working to raise the remainder.
