INDIANAPOLIS – In one of the biggest games of the season, the Colts have one of their healthiest injury reports of the season.
“Tracking well” and “tracking very well” were the phrases Shane Steichen used on Friday in discussing whether Jonathan Taylor and/or DeForest Buckner will return to game action on Sunday.
What is the latest after the Colts final practice of the week?
- Jonathan Taylor practiced all 3 days this week, including a full session of work on Thursday. A Taylor return on Sunday would mark a 3-game absence from his right ankle sprain. One of the mysteries from that Week 1 matchup between the Colts and Texans was Taylor averaging just 3.0 yards per carry (16 carries for 48 yards). Of course, this was coming off of Taylor having a banner performance of 188 yards in last year’s season finale against Houston.
- DeForest Buckner rested on Friday, after going limited on Wednesday and then full on Thursday. One benefit to re-inserting Taylor/Buckner is they both play positions where guys often rotate, and both have played on pitch counts before in their NFL careers. When asked about that on Friday, Steichen said this: “It helps. But getting those two guys back, if they are ready to roll, it’ll be huge. They are two really talented players that help us tremendously, on both sides of the football, so it’ll be good to see where that goes this week.” Buckner has missed the last 5 games.
- Remember, to make room for Buckner, the Colts will still need a corresponding roster move on the 53-man roster. That could be placing rookie LB-Jaylon Carlies on injured reserve, as that’s something Steichen said the Colts are working through as the week comes to a close. Carlies injured his right fibula in the first half of Sunday’s win over the Dolphins. He had a boot on his right foot/lower leg this week. An IR move for the 5th round pick means would mean at least 4 games missed. It would also likely mean a continued 3rd linebacker role for Grant Stuard.
- As of now, the Colts have ruled just two players out for Sunday’s game in Houston: DE-Genard Avery (foot) and LB-Jaylon Carlies (fibula, shoulder).
