HOWARD COUNTY — A former employee and basketball coach from the Taylor Community School Corporation was arrested. Randy “Scott” Sullivan, 49, was arrested for sending inappropriate photos and videos through text to one of his student-athletes.
The Howard County Sheriff’s Office investigated on September 25th after discovering those inappropriate texts from Sullivan.
The victim was groomed by Sullivan, and Sullivan drove the student to practices and events, initially appearing generous. However, the situation escalated, with the victim claiming to have rebuffed Sullivan’s advances numerous times. Sullivan confiscated the victim’s phone, threatened self-harm if exposed, displayed jealousy, and provided vapes to the minor.
Sullivan disappeared, leaving behind an apologetic note that raised suicide concerns. Authorities secured an arrest warrant upon his return. Sullivan was taken to the Howard County Jail Thursday evening, facing a $50,000 bond and multiple felony charges including child solicitation, sexual battery, and dissemination of harmful material to minors.
Taylor School Corporation Superintendent, Steve Dishon, talked to the school district, confirming Sullivan’s termination. The district banned Sullivan from all school properties and events. Dishon said Sullivan was denied access to students since his arrest.
The school district is reevaluating its policies regarding staff and coaches. They’re also planning to educate students about recognizing and reporting grooming behaviors. The administration has scheduled meetings with parents to discuss enhanced safety measures and welcomes community input on improving existing protocols.
This case has deeply shaken the local community, prompting a collective effort to prevent future incidents and protect vulnerable students. The school district’s proactive approach aims to rebuild trust and ensure a safer environment for all students moving forward.
In a Facebook post from Taylor Community School Corporation, they said a meeting will take place where parents can learn about plans to ensure school and student safety. This will happen from early Friday around 8 to 9:00 and Friday afternoon around 4 to 5:00.
