Marion County Sheriff’s Office Needs Help Finding Murder Suspect

INDIANAPOLIS–The Marion County Sheriff’s Office (MCSO) needs help finding a murder suspect who they say was accidentally released.

On Tuesday afternoon, they said 29-year-old Kevin Mason was released from the Adult Detention Center on September 13 because of a “fault records review by civilian staff.”

Colonel James Martin with the Marion County Sheriff’s Office said Mason was arrested on September 11 for three warrants from Minnesota.

“He was arrested for three different warrants for three different warrants in three different jurisdictions out of Minnesota. One was for homicide. One was for a parole violation. The other was for a firearms possession,” said Martin in a Tuesday news conference.

On September 12, Martin said one of the inmate records clerks saw three holds from Minnesota and cleared two of them because she thought she was clearing duplicate bookings for Mason. Another clerk in Minnesota waived extradition on the final warrant, but didn’t realize that someone in Marion County cleared the other two, which resulted in Mason being released.

“They were supposed to review all of the booking information and did not catch the error the day before. So far, two clerks from our agency have been terminated as a result,” said Martin.

The MCSO did not report that Mason was missing until Tuesday September 19.

“We have used this time as a tactical advantage for us. We have used the quietness of the situation to further run him underground,” said Martin.

Eventually, Martin said the MCSO needed help from the public in catching him.

“We believe that he has others financing him and helping him. We believe that’s what’s going on,” said Martin.

Mason is a 5’9” black man who weighs approximately 205 pounds with a cross tattoo under his right eye and “SUB” tattooed on his chest. He also has a neck tattoo.
