We’re heading into Week 4 of the NFL season and the Colts are 1-1-1. Needing to overcome a 17-point deficit just to tie the Houston Texans, getting shut out and humiliated by the Jacksonville Jaguars before shocking the NFL world with a last second win over the powerhouse Kansas City Chiefs. Three games into the season and one question keeps popping into my head: Who exactly are the 2022 Indianapolis Colts?
Do any of us have any idea? I sure don’t. Through three weeks of watching this Colts team all I’m certain of is I don’t know what I’ll see from a game in and game out basis. Matt Ryan has been alright. Jonathan Taylor has been fine. Wide receivers not named Michael Pittman Jr? Eh. Defense? Decent but missing Shaq Leonard, which is a whole other situation.
This Colts team has the absolute benefit of playing in the AFC South. The Jaguars are 2-1 and could very well be turning a corner with Trevor Lawrence, a revamped offensive attack with Doug Pederson and a defense that looks better than expected. They could be trouble, but it’s safe to say the Titans and Texans have either regressed or are in full rebuild mode. It could still very much be a two-team race for the division, with the Jaguars replacing the Titans in that mix to go with the Colts.
That puts all the more importance on Sunday’s game between the Titans. The Colts are winless through two division games to this points so there is even more pressure to get into the win column on Sunday. A win over the Titans not only gets the division win monkey off the Colts back but it puts Tennessee in a 1-3 hole with a brutal stretch of opponents still on the schedule.
On Wednesday’s edition of Kevin & Query, ESPN Colts reporter Stephen Holder joined the show to discuss the team to this point, what he made of the win over the Chiefs and what they are heading into Sunday against a Titans team that is also needing a solid performance.
We’ll see what happens with the Colts goin forward. Hopefully Matt Ryan starts to look more like the Matt Ryan we’re used to and not the current version that looks to have aged about 5 years in one off-season. Hopefully Shaq Leonard gets fully healthy and injects a burst into the defense. And hopefully we start seeing a true identity with this team. It’s through three games and they seem to be the NFL’s Jekyll and Hyde (appropriate as we’re about to turn the page to October).
