INDIANAPOLIS — For nearly two years, drivers have had to commute the long way around Indianapolis instead of through downtown because of the closure of the North Split. It’s been redesigned and rebuilt to make it safer and allow traffic to move more smoothly.

INDOT says they are looking at December as the most likely time you will start seeing the brand new interchange start to reopen.

“Our biggest goal of 2022 is opening up the interchange,” said Kyleigh Cramer, INDOT spokesperson, on WISH-TV. “You’ll still see some construction and some INDOT trucks in 2023, of course.”

She said by 2023 INDOT will be working on filling in space once occupied by the old interchange with green space. Cramer said the new North Split will take up less space than the one prior to it while also making it safer.

“We’re stacking everything to make it smaller,” she said. “That was the biggest design that we wanted. We wanted to give room back to some places so we are building a lot more ramps in areas for people to get to and from without having to cross traffic really quickly.”

That was the biggest reason why the North Split saw some of the most accidents out of any other interstate interchange with the old design.

November appeared to be the original completion date for the project, but Cramer said inflation has had a lot to do with hang-ups in getting the project done.

“Not only are those prices increasing, we’re finding that there is not much availability with those materials as well, which has put the biggest slow down on production,” she said.
