SHELBY COUNTY, Ind.–An off-duty Shelby County deputy died Wednesday morning in a motorcycle wreck on I-74.
Sheriff Louie Koch confirmed the man killed was deputy Jay L. Griffith, Jr.
The wreck happened shortly after 3:30 a.m., said Indiana State Police. Griffith started to skid, but it’s unclear why. When his fellow deputies arrived, Griffith was pinned under the bike and was unconscious and unresponsive.
Griffith joined the department in June 2013, said Koch.
“Deputy Griffith’s passing is an immense loss to the Shelby County Sheriff’s Dept., and our community in which he lived and served,” said the sheriff in a statement to reporters.
Koch asked for privacy for the Griffith family and expressed his condolences.
