HAMMOND, Ind.–The gun used to kill Chicago Police Officer Ella French, 29, and critically wound her partner last summer in Chicago, was purchased in March 2021, in Hammond, Indiana, say federal prosecutors. They’ve charged Jamel Danzy, 30, of Hammond, with federal firearm conspiracy. He pleaded guilty to the charge Wednesday.

Danzy had his day in court via video conference. He could get up to one year and four months when he’s sentenced in October.

French and her partner were shot on the south side of Chicago when they pulled over an SUV with an expired tag. The two brothers who were inside are awaiting trial on murder charges.

Eric and Emonte Morgan were both arrested and charged not long after the killing. Authorities say the gun was found in a yard where Eric Morgan was arrested.

Danzy admitted to going to Indiana to buy the gun, knowing it would go to someone who wasn’t legally allowed to have it.

French was 29 when she died.
