COLUMBUS, Ind. – A father and two children are without a home after a fire Tuesday evening in Columbus.

Firefighters responded to a rental home around 6:45 p.m. at 41 South Cherry Street, east of downtown Columbus. When they got there, the home and a vehicle in the driveway were on fire. A neighbor also told firefighters that children could be inside.

Crews were able to extinguish the fire and found that the home was unoccupied.

The tenant, Bradley Mercer, 42, told investigators that he found out about the fire after his neighbor called him. He and his kids left the home 30 minutes before he got the call. Mercer had been living in the rental for 4 months.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation. The family is receiving emergency assistance from the Salvation Army. No injuries were reported.
