SAN ANTONIO, Texas. — A trailer containing dozens of dead migrants discovered near San Antonio passed through a border checkpoint in Laredo yesterday afternoon.

Nearly four-dozen people were found dead in the trailer yesterday after someone stopped to help an injured girl in need of help.

The Monitor reports that the trailer passed through the North Laredo Border Patrol checkpoint at around 2 p.m. yesterday. Agents from the Laredo sector are reportedly part of the investigation into the deadly human smuggling attempt.

Three people have been arrested in the case.

Texas elected officials are responding to Monday’s discovery. San Antonio Mayor Ron Nirenberg described it as a “horrific human tragedy.” Gov. Greg Abbott blamed President Biden’s “deadly open border policies.”

Democratic State Sen. Roland Gutierrez blamed Abbott. Democratic U.S. Congressman Joaquin Castro blamed the Trump-era pandemic policy known as Title 42.

Democratic gubernatorial candidate Beto O’Rourke said the state needs “expanded avenues for legal migration.”
