INDIANAPOLIS– There was a fatal crash on the southeast side of Indianapolis Friday morning.

Police say it happened just before 4 a.m. along I-465 southbound, near the ramp from Interstate 74 to I-465. That is just north of Beech Grove. One person was killed.

“This was a two-vehicle crash. One of the vehicles was a Jeep that was heavily damaged. When troopers arrived, they found a male entrapped in the wreckage. Despite life-saving efforts, that male was pronounced dead on the scene” said John Perrine, sergeant with Indiana State Police.

That person who died has been identified as 31-year-old Joseph Dely of Muncie. Perrine says Dely was in the Jeep.

“Preliminarily, one of the things that we do believe at this point is that the driver of the passenger car that struck the back of the Jeep was distracted by a cellphone,” said Perrine.

The other vehicle was a Chevrolet Malibu. The driver of the Malibu has been identified as 22-year-old Teriyon Carter of Indianapolis. Perrine says the investigation into the crash is far from over.

“There’s a lot left to this investigation. That includes determining speeds, determining any level of intoxication, and just trying to figure out the details of what caused the crash. Our investigation could change at some point. At this moment, no criminal charges have been filed,” said Perrine.

All lanes of I-465 southbound are open now, but they were closed for several hours.
