INDIANAPOLIS – It’s another ‘win now’ move with plenty of familiarity coming with it.
The Colts have opted for an uber-veteran backup quarterback in 2022, one year after shuffling through a trio of backups.
Per NFL Network, Nick Foles has signed with the Colts, on a two-year deal, with the expectation that he will back-up the extremely durable Matt Ryan.
In Ryan and Foles, the Colts will have the most experienced QB duo in the NFL. This move likely sends Sam Ehlinger to more of a 3rd QB/practice squad role.
Foles and Frank Reich have a long history together, with the duo extremely close off the field, too.
Earlier this year, Reich presented Foles the ‘Call to Courage’ award, which is an annual award given to a current NFL player for their character, commitment and leadership both on the field and in the community.
When Foles wrote a book a few years back on his own journey, it was Reich who wrote the forward for het book.
Chris Ballard has seen Foles’ work up-close, too, with the two overlapping in Kansas City during the 2016 campaign.
Foles, 33, is 29-27 all-time as a starter. He’s thrown for 82 touchdowns and 43 interceptions. He’s played for the Eagles, Bears, Jaguars, Chiefs and Rams.
Since going on that magical Super Bowl run with Reich as his offensive coordinator in 2018, Foles is just 3-9 as a starter, playing in Chicago most recently.
If Ryan’s impressive availability continues, Foles shouldn’t expect to play much in Indy. Ryan has missed just 1 game in his last 12 seasons.
Currently, the Colts have 4 quarterbacks on their 90-man roster: Matt Ryan (8,003 career passes), Nick Foles (2,045 career passes), Sam Ehlinger (0 NFL passes), Jack Coan (0 NFL passes). To make room for Foles, the Colts waived fellow quarterback James Morgan.
