GARY, Ind. — Two people are in custody after a long police chase involving two cars that started in Illinois on Monday.

At around 3:00 p.m. Indiana State Police were tipped off about a theft that happened in Illinois. While troopers were on the lookout for a car involved in that incident, police got a 911 call about a man, Rashawn Thompson, 18, of Chicago, who stole a car from a woman at gunpoint.

Not long after that, another call came in about a shooting between two cars on I-80 just south of Gary involving Thompson.

State police eventually started chasing both cars, one of which was driven by Tyzerrick Smith, 21, of Chicago. Smith crashed his car along Cline Ave. and was easily arrested.

However, Thompson was still on the loose and state troopers stayed on him onto I-80 once again. Thompson eventually exited onto Cline Ave. again where he crashed.

Thompson got out of the car with a gun in his hand and that’s when troopers fired at him. It’s unclear if Thompson was hit by the gunfire, but as shots were being fired, troopers say Thompson jumped off the 30-foot bridge embankment of Cline Ave. and was hurt when he reached the bottom.

He was given first aid and then taken to a Chicago hospital.
