RANDOLPH COUNTY, Ind. — A man in a stolen semi is dead after a police chase early Tuesday in Wayne and Randolph Counties.

State police say a Richmond police officer, who was off-duty in his personal vehicle, was driving along US 27 in Wayne County when he spotted a semi that looked like one that had recently been reported stolen.

The officer followed and when the driver of the semi pulled over on his own the officer made contact and that’s when the driver, Troy Lewis, 40, got out and attacked the officer.

“Deputies from the Wayne County Sheriff’s Department and officers from the Fountain City Police Department located Lewis after he fled the scene,” said Sgt. Coley Richardson with Indiana State Police. “Lewis refused to stop as officers pursued him into southern Randolph County.”

Lewis pulled over eventually.

“Lewis refused to exit and officers heard a gunshot come from the vehicle,” Richardson added. “Officers approached the vehicle and found Lewis who was suffering from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.”

Lewis was taken to a hospital in Dayton, Ohio but he was pronounced dead not long after arriving.
