INDIANAPOLIS–Police arrested a man who they say stole a truck and caused a chase Tuesday night on the south side of Indianapolis.

Officers were patrolling near Troy Avenue and South Meridian Street — an area known for stolen vehicles — and one noticed a new GMC with a dealer plate, according to police. The officer ran the plate and the truck came back as stolen.

They tried to stop the truck near Meridian and Yoke Streets, but the driver sped off.

“During the pursuit, the male driver actually rammed a couple of our police cars and caused minor damage to them. Officers were eventually able to apprehend him in the woods. We discovered that he also had a firearm that had been stolen,” said Kerry Buckner, IMPD Nightwatch Commander.

He was taken into custody near Sandhurst Drive and Epler Avenue. He had crashed into a trail. They took him to a hospital for chest injuries.

Police say the driver was wanted for an incident in early January in which he got into a fight with an officer. The officer had to fire his weapon. The man got away from the scene that night. No one was injured in that incident.

A woman in the passenger seat was also arrested on an unrelated warrant.
