INDIANAPOLIS–An SUV slammed into a classroom at Douglas MacArthur Elementary School on the south side of Indianapolis Monday morning.

“I just heard something go in a room next to us and a scream. We saw the janitor go in there and someone come back creaming, ‘I’m gonna call 911’,” said a student who was inside the school when it happened, while students were still being dropped off. “We all heard the crash. Only the kids heard the scream.”

Three people were hurt, according to an e-mail sent to parents by Perry Township Schools. The people were not identified, but one witness said that a teacher was taken out of the building and put into an ambulance. Another person injured wasn the driver.

“We heard everybody screaming outside and even the lunch ladies were out there.”

Both Marion County dispatch and Perry Township Schools described the incident as an accident, and people were not concerned there was any more danger.

“We were evacuated and the teachers wouldn’t let us see what happened,” said the student. Her choir teacher had the class sing their favorite selection from “The Music an”, “Pick a little, Talk a Little”, while the teacher assessed the situation.

“The teachers had us go into the gym. Once we had to leave, there were lines all over the place.”

Parents were reached by phone and e-mail and asked to come pick up their kids. The school served kindergarten through fifth grade.

“Douglas MacArthur Elementary School will be closed for the remainder of the day. Douglas MacArthur Kindergarten Academy will be in session. During this time, crews will be assessing the damage to ensure the building is structurally sound. We will have an update for you later today. Thank you for your patience and understanding,” read an e-mail to parents.

A school district spokesperson said there will be school Tuesday.
