PORTER COUNTY, Ind. — A man fell through the ice on Lake Michigan Monday at Indiana Dunes National Park.

The Indiana DNR called in the help of the U.S. Coast Guard Monday evening after they got a report of someone having fallen through an ice shelf on West Beach at around 5:30 p.m.

The DNR says they think the man and four other people were climbing on shelf ice, but when the ice started to crack beneath them they started back towards shore. On their way back they say the man fell through and they were unable to save him.

Conservation officers say the man who fell through is from Indianapolis.

The DNR has always urged people to stay off of frozen parts of the Great Lakes during the winter time since the water can be unpredictable and dangerous
