BEIJING–A Hoosier won a gold medal at the Winter Olympics in Beijing Thursday morning.

In the debut of mixed team aerials freestyle skiing, the team of Ashley Caldwell, Christopher Lillis, and Justin Schoenefeld took home the gold.

Lillis’ back double full-full-double full was granted the highest score of any trick in the finals. The U.S. sealed the gold medal when Schoenefeld followed that up with a clean back double full-full-full.

Schoenefeld is from Lawrenceburg, Indiana.

China got the silver medal. Canada took home the bronze.

The U.S. hadn’t won a medal in aerials since 2010 when Jeret Peterson took home the silver in the men’s event. Prior to this event, the last Americans to win gold were Eric Bergoust and Nikki Stone in 1998.
