INDIANAPOLIS – Despite Chris Ballard stating the tight end position needs attention this offseason, it sounds like Mo Aile-Cox will remain in the future plans.
Alie-Cox, 28, can hit free agency next month.
His No. 2 tight end role for the Colts could move one spot higher on the depth chart, depending on the possible retirement of Jack Doyle and how the team handles tight end this offseason.
No matter how those play out, the Colts want to continue the development of the former basketball player.
“We like Mo,” Ballard says. “We’d like to get Mo back.”
The Colts are still intrigued with the growth that 2021 rookie Kylen Granson showed during Year 1, too.
Alie-Cox caught 24 balls for 316 yards and 4 touchdowns last season. He took a major dip in catch percentage.
Doyle and Alie Cox actually played a very similar amount last year. Doyle was on the field for 643 offensive snaps (57.8 percent of the offensive snaps). Alie-Cox played 609 snaps (54.7 percent).
At the age of 28, Alie-Cox could be viewed as a younger free agent than his age indicates, given the fact that he didn’t play football in college.
Tight end is a definite need for the Colts this offseason.
But it doesn’t sound like that will come at the expense of wanting to move on from Alie-Cox.
The Colts want Alie-Cox back, while also addressing the position, too.
