The Indiana Department of Health says a total of 16 Hoosiers have died from the flu for the 2021-22 flu season.

Of the 16 who have died, 10 of those people were ages 65 and older, 5 were between the ages of 50-64, and one person was younger than 50.

Flu deaths in the Hoosier state are well below historical norms, according to data from the Indiana Department of Health.

The state logged more than 300 influenza-related deaths for the 2017-2018 flu season.

Experts say the decline is the result of people wearing masks, washing their hands frequently, and physically distancing.

WIBC’s Rob Kendall has a different theory on why flu deaths have declined. Click below to listen.
