PORTLAND, Ind. — Imagine coming home and finding a stranger inside, wearing your clothes. That’s what police say happened to a woman in Portland.

Police say the woman entered her apartment on W. Main Street on Wednesday and found a woman — later identified as Amber Newton — inside.

The woman said her apartment was trashed, with belongings everywhere. She told police Newton was wearing her clothing and that some of her possessions, including a laptop, prescription drugs, and a debit card, had been put in a suitcase in the apartment, reports The Star Press.

Newton told police that a backpack found in the apartment belonged to her, but the woman insisted it was hers. When police opened the backpack, they found the woman’s belongings inside.

When Newton was taken to the Jay County Jail, a jail officer searched her and found the woman’s checkbook, according to The Star Press.

Newton is charged with felony burglary and felony theft. She has previously been convicted of theft, fraud, and obtaining a controlled substance by fraud.
