BLOOMINGTON, Ind. — An Indiana University student has been arrested and is accused of trying to rape a fellow student.

The IU Police Department was called to Union Street Center Birch Hall around 10:30 Sunday night, reports the IU Daily Student. The caller said she could hear noise coming from another student’s room, and that she believed that student was overdosing.

Police arrived and found IU student Kalp Patel attacking a girl – the same girl who called police for help.

Officers pulled Patel off the girl and took him into custody. The girl told police that she eventually forced her way into the room to try and help Patel. She says Patel woke up and claims he tried to rape her. She was able to fight off Patel until officers arrived.

IUPD took Patel to IU Health Bloomington Hospital, then to the Monroe County Jail. Police aren’t sure if Patel actually used any drugs.

Kalp Patel faces charges of rape, criminal confinement, strangulation, and several other crimes.
