INDIANAPOLIS — Tony Kanaan will return in the month of May to try and take one more crack at the Indianapolis 500.

Kanaan has agreed to a one-off race deal with Chip Ganassi Racing and the American Legion to sponsor his ride for the 106th running of the race.

He won the race in 2013 and has started every Indy 500 since 2002.

Kanaan ceased running in the NTT IndyCar Series after the 2019 season and has been in the series on a part-time basis since then with Chip Ganassi Racing. He drove the No. 48-car last year for Jimmie Johnson in the Indy 500, as Johnson was not yet ready to race on oval tracks in the IndyCar ranks.

Johnson plans to try and qualify this year.
