INDIANAPOLIS — Indy Metro Police want you to be careful with the trash you leave outside your home this holiday season.

IMPD says empty boxes, especially those that come with tech items and toys, could lure thieves to your home if left out with the garbage.

“We’ve definitely seen burglaries like this before,” IMPD Public Information Officer Craig Wagoner tells WISH-TV. “We definitely want our community to take precautions in protecting themselves by breaking down those boxes and throwing away those items discreetly so that thieves can’t see what’s in their house this holiday season.”

More home break-ins happen during the summer months than in the winter, says the FBI, but there is usually a spike around the holiday season.

In 2019, there were more than 1.1 million burglaries in the United States, or approximately once every 15 seconds, according to The Zebra.

Ofc. Wagoner suggests putting empty boxes in trash bags to hide them or taking them to get recycled instead of leaving them out on the curb with the garbage.
