INDIANAPOLIS–Hundreds of volunteers showed up to feed the hungry in Indianapolis Thanksgiving Day.
The Mozel Sanders Foundation served its one millionth meal to a mother of 8 in Indianapolis. Volunteers with the foundation also delivered more than 10,000 meals Thursday. They typically serve between 20,000 to 40,000 meals every year, but operations were scaled back because of the pandemic.
“Well there’s a lot of need. That’s the bad news. The good news is we are addressing it in a meaningful way as we come out of the pandemic,” said Joe Hogsett, mayor of Indianapolis, to IndyPolitics. “The numbers are improving. Our Office of Nutrition and Food Access has more money that it’s ever had before.”
Hogsett called the one millionth meal served a “great milestone.”
“Now, I’m glad that many people have been served. I’d like it if we could put the Mozel Sanders Foundation out of business, with all due respect,” said Hogsett.
He says the City of Indianapolis will be using American Rescue Plan money to address food access, food nutrition, food availability and, and food insecurity.
The organization was started 50 years ago when Reverend Mozel Sanders saw people working outside of his church on Thanksgiving Day, with no food. He began to serve his neighbors. The initiative took off from there.
