WASHINGTON — An Indiana lawmaker is in trouble for failing to complete a House security screening.

Rep. Jim Baird has been fined $5,000 after an incident last week, where he walked around a metal detector instead of go through it.

The Hill reports that a Capitol police officer got Baird’s attention and told him he needed to go through the security checkpoint before going on the House floor, but the memo says Baird “made eye contact” with the officer and then just walked away.

A spokesperson for Baird says he will appeal the fine and “believes this is a misunderstanding.”

Baird has a prosthetic hand after losing his left arm while serving in the Vietnam War.

House Democrats enacted the fines to enforce everyone to comply with the security screenings, after the Jan. 6 attack on the Capitol.
