FULTON COUNTY, Ind. — In 2018, three children were killed and a fourth child was seriously injured when they were hit by a truck at their bus stop in Fulton County. A report by the South Bend Tribune says the Tippecanoe Valley School Corporation paid the families soon after the crash.
A settlement was reached just seven months after the crash happened, but the South Bend Tribune was able to get a copy of the papers this week.
Alyssa Shepherd drove around the stopped school bus on Highway 25 and hit and killed 9-year-old Alivia Stahl, and her 6-year-old twin half-brothers, Xzavier and Mason Ingle. 11-year-old Maverik Lowe was seriously injured in the crash.
The school corporation paid the families nearly $3.5 million — more than a million dollars went to the Ingle family, just over $200,000 was given to Stahl’s father, another $1.24 million is going to an estate created in the children’s names, and Lowe’s family received $900,000.
About nine months after the settlement was reached, the NTSB finished their investigation, which said Shepherd failed to stop for the school bus with its lights and stop arm, but also said the corporation was partially responsible for inadequate safety procedures, making the children walk across Highway 25.
