(INDIANAPOLIS) – The Indy Cultural Trail has broken ground for a two-mile expansion.
The eight-mile trail will add one new stretch connecting Fountain Square to the Indiana Convention Center, snaking past the historic Slippery Noodle blues bar on its way there. Another new section will wind past the Madame Walker Theatre and Indiana Avenue, the jazz mecca of Indianapolis and the 1940s and the only historically African-American neighborhood among the trail’s designated historic districts.
The expansion was announced last February. Engineers have been working on design details since then. Executive director Karen Haley says construction will start in the next week or two, and should be complete by late spring of 2023.
Haley says the expansion will create a biking and walking trail that’s seamless from end to end.
