INDIANAPOLIS–Two people were injured in what police are calling a “disturbance” on the east side of Indianapolis Tuesday night.

Just before midnight, IMPD officers responded to the 100 block of Villa Avenue, which is near Southeastern and South State avenues. Police say a dog ran at an IMPD officer and bit the officer. That officer fired his gun and hit the dog. The dog died. Another person was also trying to get control of the animal. That person was hit by gunfire, but they are at a hospital and expected to make a full recovery.

“Any time an officer has to discharge a firearm, in particular in a case where someone is hurt, those can be difficult for the officers to handle, so we’ve got support on scene. Detectives will attempt to identify any video evidence, any forensic evidence, and speak with any witnesses who might have information,” said IMPD Lieteunant Shane Foley at the scene.

The officer had minor injuries from the dog bite.

IMPD’s Critical Response Team is handling the investigation.
