INDIANAPOLIS — An arrest has been made in the death of a Southport High School student at a gas station on the south side of Indianapolis.

Just after 8:00 p.m. Monday, an Indy police officer was patrolling the area near a Speedway gas station on Keystone Ave. when she heard gunshots. The officer went to the gas station and found 17-year-old Jack Sumner Jr., who had been shot.

Sumner was taken to the hospital, where he died. He was a student at Southport High School.

Now, police say they have arrested 22-year-old Tyrese Roberts for homicide.

“One homicide in our city is too much. We cannot say that enough. We cannot stress that enough,” said Ofc. Samone Burris. “A family is devastated. A community is devastated. My officers continue to experience and go through the same trauma that the community is feeling because our officers have to respond to the scene each and every day.”

“Perry Township Schools has been informed of an incident last night resulting in the death of a Southport High School student,” said Perry Township Schools in a statement. “Counseling will be provided to any staff or student affected by this loss, and we are prepared to bring in additional help if necessary. Our thoughts, prayers and support are with the friends and family of this Southport High student.”
