US Climate Envoy John Kerry told the French media that President Biden was “not aware” that the AUKUS nuclear submarine deal would upset them.

The US made a tri-lateral security agreement with the UK and Australia for the Indo-Pacific region. Once the agreement was announced, France voiced their anger from being excluded from the deal, recalling ambassadors to the US and Australia in protest.

Kerry spoke to French news channel, BFMTV, Monday to essentially patch things up with the country, which included lots of groveling. He makes sure to point out how what a great historical leader France has been as well as how great a team the US and France make.

“We have a relationship with France that is so much bigger than this moment of what happened with respect to a lack of communication.”

Kerry also made it clear that the president had no clue they were stepping on France’s toes.

“He literally had not been aware of what had transpired. I don’t want to go into the details of it, but suffice it to say, that the president, my president is very committed to strengthening the relationship and making sure that this is a small event of the past and moving on to the much more important future.”

Tony Katz says Biden’s staff is just as at fault.

“The president of the United States wasn’t aware that creating a deal with Australia and the UK would upset the French? No one informed him that the French had a 40 billion dollar submarine deal with the Aussies?… “He wasn’t aware” is a horrible thing to say because it leads to the question of what else is Joe Biden not aware of?”
