NEW CARLISLE, Ind. — A small tornado touched down in St. Joseph County on Sunday as a few spotty storms moved through.

The tornado was on the ground for only about a minute in an open field just to the east of New Carlisle.

The National Weather Service of Northern Indiana says they could not get an accurate read on of the winds speed of the tornado were, so they gave the tornado an EF-U designation.

Meteorologist Patrick Murphy says these types of tornadoes are typically called “landspouts.” He says these types of tornadoes come from weaker storms that are not “supercell” tornadoes, which you typically hear about.
