An 18-year-old suspect accused of shooting another teen at a Ben Davis High School football game Friday night told police he shot the boy “on accident” while firing warning shots at the victim.

David Tillman said he was acting in self-defense when he shot the 16-year-old boy in the right elbow at 9:20 p.m. outside Ben Davis’ homecoming football game against Carmel.

The victim was taken to a hospital in stable condition.

Tillman attempted to flee from officers at the scene and was later arrested. He is facing preliminary charges of battery by means of a deadly weapon, criminal recklessness, and carrying a handgun without a license.

Ben Davis High School has metal detectors at the entrance to the stadium. Friday night’s shooting took place in the stadium’s parking lot.

Multiple local media outlets were covering the game when the shooting occurred. WIBC’s Hammer and Nigel have audio in the clip below.
