CHICAGO — The Indiana man accused of purchasing the gun used to kill a Chicago police officer is out on bond.

Jamel Danzy, of Hammond, is accused of being a straw buyer, meaning he bought the gun for a person who is not allowed to buy one because of a criminal record.

Prosecutors say Danzy admitted to buying the gun that was used to kill 29-year-old Officer Ella French during a Saturday evening traffic stop.

Police say Danzy took the gun from Indiana to Chicago and either sold it or gave it to the person accused of killing French.

Danzy was released on a $4,500 unsecured bond and court supervision, according to Fox 32 in Chicago.
