WASHINGTON–Transportation Secretary and former South Bend Mayor Pete Buttigieg says the bipartisan infrastructure bill will create huge economic growth.

“The fact that the U.S. Chamber of Commerce and the AFL-CIO are talking in the same favorable way about the same bill really tells you about its economic power,” said Buttigieg in an interview with Fox News Sunday.

Republicans are criticizing the infrastructure plan because of its trillion-dollar price tag adding to the national debt, but Buttigieg says people need to realize the difficulty that America would be facing if Congress does nothing.

“We have another deficit that’s not being talked about enough right now. It is the cost that Americans are paying every day because our roads are not in good enough shape and they’re damaging cars when they drive over holes in the road,” said Buttigieg.

Buttigieg believes that is causing America to be less competitive with other countries, especially China.

“You look at China making massive investments in infrastructure. They’re doing it not because the Chinese Community party is full of infrastructure enthusiasts like me. They’re doing it because they recognize the economic power of good economic investments,” said Buttigieg.

The $1.2 trillion bipartisan infrastructure package is poised for a final vote in the Senate this week.
