INDIANAPOLIS — The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department and the FBI are partnering on a new carjacking task force.

The task force will include IMPD Robbery Detectives, FBI Violent Crimes Task Force Officers, and Special Agents with the FBI.

Suspects arrested for carjacking will have their case presented to the United States Attorney’s Office for review and could face federal charges.

IMPD says Marion County has experienced a 52% increase in reported carjackings in 2021 compared to 2020. There were 112 carjackings in Marion County between Jan. 1 and June 30. A suspect was arrested in about 20 of those cases.

More than half of those arrested for carjacking this year were under the age of 18, says IMPD. Just over 30% of those arrested were under 16 years old.

If you have tips on a carjacking, call the IMPD robbery office at 217-327-3475. Callers can also remain anonymous by calling Crime Stoppers at 317-262-TIPS.
