STATEWIDE — New data from the U.S. Census Bureau shows Hoosiers getting new jobs aren’t being paid as much as new hires in other states.

The report says new hires in Indiana are making an average of $2,917 per month. That’s the 11th-lowest wage in the country, and below the national average of $3,266 per month.

People getting new jobs in Washington are making the most, with an average of $4,045 per month. Montana, Hawaii, and Idaho have the lowest wages for new hires.

The industry paying the most right now? Computer programming and technology jobs are paying an average of $7,060 per month, or nearly $85,000 a year. Mining, oil and gas, and utilities are also at the top of the list, while jobs in food services are still offering the lowest wages — about $17,500 a year.
