PLAINFIELD, Ill. — The NTT IndyCar Series field for Road America is expanding by one.

Cody Ware, the son of IMSA SportsCar team owner Rick Ware, will pilot the No. 52 car in a second Dale Coyne/Rick Ware Racing entry. It will be Cody Ware’s first taste of competitive IndyCar racing.

“To be a part of an NTT IndyCar Series race is such an honor, and a surreal experience for me,” Ware said in a statement on the team’s website.

“I never would’ve thought that I would ever go down the open-wheel route for a multitude of reasons. But thanks to RWR, Dale Coyne Racing, and Biohaven/Nurtec ODT I am getting an opportunity to compete at the highest level of open-wheel motorsport in the US.”

He joins fellow Dale Coyne teammates Ed Jones and Romain Grosjean on the Road America entry list.

Cody Ware has been running part-time for Rick Ware Racing in the NASCAR Cup Series this year along with some sports car rides including running the LMP2 class for his father’s team in the 24 Hour of Daytona. His only IndyCar experience was gathered at a testing session at Sebring during the winter before the start of the 2021 season.

Road America is the first of what is expected to be a handful of races that Ware will compete in this season.

It was expected that Ware would pilot the No. 52 in this year’s Indianapolis 500, but the team was unable to secure proper sponsorship for the car in time for race day.
