Every professional who works as an interpreter for the deaf fears the moment in their career when a decision must be made between accuracy and basic decency – a ‘Sophie’s Choice’ with potential consequences that will last a lifetime.
For example: let’s say the President of the United States just said something to a crowd of veterans that borders on ‘Jared from Subway’ in its creepiness factor.
A decision must now be made:
- I will faithfully interpret what I just heard and go down with the ship.
- I will pretend that I too am temporarily legally deaf.
The White House interpreter for President Biden was faced with choice last Friday after Joe made the ill-advised decision to go off-script during a speech he gave to military families ahead of Memorial Day.
Gazing at a little girl in the audience who is the daughter of a veteran, Biden offered the following cringe-worthy observation: “I love those barrettes in your hair. Man, I’ll tell you what, look at her. She looks like she’s 19 years old sitting there like a little lady with her legs crossed.”
