COLUMBUS, Ind. — An 18-year-old was arrested Friday after he led police on a chase, crashing into several cars in the process.

The chase started around 3 p.m. Friday.

Police were called to the area of 3rd and Lindsey streets, near the White River, after a woman called 911 to report she had been rear-ended and run off the road.

When officers got there, they spotted Edgar DelaCruz Veronico driving a red 2009 Ford Mustang. They noticed his car had front end damage and was smoking — but when officers tried to stop him, he sped off.

Later, another officer tried to stop Veronico. Instead of stopping, however, Veronico crashed into the back of a Cadillac on U.S. 31.

Veronico then got out and tried to run, but officers caught him near Shannon Drive and Dale Court.

An investigation revealed Veronico was involved in three other accidents between striking the woman near the river and the Cadillac. In addition, a blood test showed Veronico was drunk during the chase.

Veronico is now in the Bartholomew County Jail facing eight preliminary charges, including driving drunk, resisting arrest, leaving an accident scene, reckless driving and underage drinking. However, as of Monday, no official charges have been filed.
