ANDERSON, Ind. — A shootout in Anderson ended with a 60-year-old man dead Tuesday evening.

Police say they were called shortly before 6-o-clock about a man firing a gun south of the downtown area of Anderson, near the Anderson Preparatory Academy along West 29th Street.

Witnesses said the man pointed a gun at an officer and then that officer ordered the man to drop it several times. He refused to drop it and that’s when shots were exchanged between the two.

The officer was not hurt in the melee but the man was critically injured and later died at the hospital.

Standard procedure has the officers who fired shot on paid leave while the incident is looked into.
