INDIANAPOLIS–The four people shot and killed at a house on North Randolph St., Saturday night, have been ID’d by the Marion County coroner.
Coroner Alfie Ballew said Monday morning that Anthony Johnson, 35; Dequan Moore, 23; Eve Moore, 7; and Tomeeka Brown, 44, all died from gunshot wounds.
A man wanted for questioning in their deaths, Malik Halfacre, 25, was taken into custody Sunday after hiding in an attic for several hours. Indianapolis Metro Police Deputy Chief Craig McCart confirmed that Halfacre was the father of Malia Halfacre, the six-month-old girl who was taken from the home and later found safe.
“We just know that there was an argument there that escalated to the point where he pulled out his weapon and started shooting everyone in the home,” said McCart. The baby’s mom survived and told police what happened. McCart confirmed that Halfacre was charged with murder, attempted murder and robbery, after being questioned.
Chief Randal Taylor said that at least five of the seven people murdered over the weekend were killed because of domestic violence.
“Domestic violence is real. There are resources that exist in our community to help people who are in need. As a community we must continue to work together to solve these issues,” said Taylor. “We must speak up and request help before we get to this point.”
McCart indicated that more people have been forced into close companionship with family members for a prolonged period because of the pandemic, and that has put a previously unknown stress factor on people. He suggested again that people seek help before things get out of control.
“It’s a real misfortune when we become numb to that kind of violence and certainly it’s not something that our community can tolerate,” he said. McCart said one difference with the quadruple killing is that people came forward to talk to police and tell them where Malik Halfacre was hiding. He said that is progress.
