INDIANAPOLIS — It was the worst possible outcome in a late-night fire.

The Indianapolis Fire Department got a call around 9 Monday night about an alarm going off at Uncle Bill’s Pet Center on West 38th Street. Firefighters arrived to find smoke coming from the back of the building’s roof.

After nearly an hour, a combination of IFD, the Speedway Fire Department, and the Pike Township Fire Department finally put out the fire.

IFD says around 100 dogs, birds, rabbits, and other animals died due to smoke inhalation. Some reptiles, fish, a guinea pig, and an office cat survived the fire, according to investigators.

IFD isn’t sure how long the fire was actually burning before the alarm sounded. Nearby businesses reported smelling smoke through the roof area. Investigators also have to find out what exactly caused the fire.
