ALBANY, N.Y.  —  A new report says an aide to New York Governor Andrew Cuomo has admitted that information on the number of nursing home residents who died due to COVID-19 was intentionally withheld.

According to the New York Post, Secretary to the Governor Melissa DeRosa told Democratic lawmakers Wednesday the decision was made due to concerns those numbers could have been used against Cuomo’s administration by the Department of Justice.

Some state lawmakers requested the nursing home death data but were never granted access to it.

A spokesperson for the governor’s office says that’s because the initial focus was on making sure federal prosecutors would have any information they requested.
