INDIANAPOLIS — A 31-year-old man was shot by a police officer on Saturday near a shopping center on the city’s west side.

Indy Metro Police say an officer pulled a car over in the 5100 block of W. Washington Street, and one of people inside the car ran.

The officer chased after him, and IMPD said it’s believed that the man and officer shot at each other. The man was shot at least once, and taken to a hospital.

A gun was found at the scene, and police say the man had was an active warrant for possession of a firearm by a serious violent felon, resisting law enforcement, and residential entry.

When the man was released from the hospital he was arrested and is now also accused of another possession of a firearm charge and attempted battery.

The officer was wearing a body camera, and it was on during the shooting. IMPD said the officer has been put on administrative leave as they investigate the incident.

Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers.
